5 Benefits Of Regular Good Quality Sleep

Sleep awareness week kicks of this month, from the 6th to the 12th of July. You know you feel more energetic after a good night’s sleep but did you know sleep impacts on your body in a number of ways, from keeping your immune system strong to balancing hormones to effectively losing weight? Sleep is important for so many reasons!

5 benefits of regular good quality sleep:

1. Balance your hormones

Lack of sleep affects hormone balance. Sleep deprivation studies have shown that restricting sleep changes how our hormones work: our blood sugar levels become unbalanced, our cells become less sensitive to the actions of insulin, our stress hormone cortisol is increased in the evening (when it should be at its lowest) and our hunger hormones become unbalanced, resulting in greater hunger. Which leads us into:

2. Enhance weight loss

Diet and exercise are important for weight loss. If you are doing everything right and still having trouble shifting weight it might be time to look at your sleep patterns. Due to the change in hunger hormones with sleep deprivation you are more likely to snack on carbohydrate rich foods the day after a poor night’s sleep. These changes in hormone levels are not just seen in major sleep deprived states either. Just an hour less sleep a night can mess with the delicate balance of hormones that are needed to keep appetite in check, and carbohydrate metabolism balanced.

3. Boost your immune function

Your immune system is extremely active overnight while you are sleeping. During winter when viruses are more active and prevalent, it is especially important to make sure you are getting enough sleep.

4. Make yourself smarter

Memory formation and consolidation of learning occurs during sleep so if you are regularly getting less than 6 hours of sleep per night then your cognitive function is suffering. Getting good quality sleep at night means you will be more able to focus better on tasks during the day and learning will be more efficient.

5. Look better!

This one may be partly driven by vanity, however if you get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis your skin will be firmer and you are less likely to have dark circles or puffiness around the eyes.

If you are having troubles getting enough sleep, or having issues with falling asleep or maintaining good quality sleep, then certain herbs and nutrients could be beneficial to you in the short term.
